Kuala Selangor: Top 7 Must-visit Destinations and Things to Do

Kuala Selangor is a town located in Kuala Selangor District, Selangor, Malaysia. Do you know that it was the capital of the Sultanate of Selangor during its very early years in the 18th century? It is 42km north-west of Shah Alam, the current capital of Selangor.

How far is Kuala Selangor from Kuala Lumpur?

Kuala Selangor is an hour’s drive or a 2-hour bus ride away from Kuala Lumpur. It is quite a direct and easy journey along the North-South Highway.

7 must-visit destinations in Kuala Selangor

As a coastal town at the estuary of the Selangor River, there are lots of beautiful places to visit and many interesting things to do in Kuala Selangor. Its landscape consists largely of flatlands with a few hills covering the east and a scenic coastline to the west. Here are 7 breathtaking places in Kuala Selangor that you must surely add to your Cute-Cute Malaysia bucket list!

#1 Learn about Kuala Selangor’s history at Bukit Malawati (Malawati Hill)

Bukit Malawati is a historical attraction that holds the history Selangor’s beginnings and establishment. From the base of the hill, you can take a tram ride up to its peak, where you can overlook the picturesque Straits of Malacca.

Other attractions to visit at Bukit Malawati include the famous Altinsburg lighthouse that was built in 1907 and the Malawati Fort that was built by Sultan Ibrahim of Selangor in the 1700s to protect against Dutch invaders. As you explore Bukit Malawati, do acquaint yourselves with the resident silvered leaf monkeys and long-tailed macaques that make their home here.

#2 Kelip-kelip after dark at Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park

When night falls in Kuala Selangor, the fireflies light up the night like flickering stars in the sky. These fireflies, or ‘kelip-kelip’ as they are called in Malay, may be one of the biggest firefly colonies in the world! They live in a particular mangrove tree species – berembang – that grows in abundance along the Selangor River banks.

At Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park, visitors get to travel on a sampan through the swamps to observe fireflies dancing in the mangrove in close proximity. It is definitely an enchanting night show by Mother Nature that you simply cannot miss.

#3 Bird-watching at Kuala Selangor Nature Park

Kuala Selangor Nature Park was first opened in 1987 and comprises over 300 hectares of mangroves, mud flats and secondary jungles. Under the management of the Malaysia Nature Lovers Association, the natural beauty of the Park is relatively well-preserved, and is the natural habitat of over 150 species of birds, including migratory species.

The most popular activities at Kuala Selangor Nature park are bird-watching and wildlife exploration. It sure is the perfect way to unwind amidst nature on a relaxing weekend.

#4 Explore Sekinchan on a bicycle

Although Sekinchan is a quaint fishing village, it is more famous for its beautiful paddy fields that stretch as far as your eyes can see! Immersing in its verdant abundance can truly put all your worries at bay. Riding a bicycle is probably one of the best ways to explore Sekinchan (and gives a good workout at the same time!), and there are various types of bikes available for rent.

Another one of Sekinchan’s landmark is the Sekinchan Wishing tree. Visitors who make a donation at the adjacent temple will be given a red ribbon with a Chinese coin tied at its end. You then write your wish on the ribbon, and toss it up into the tree. According to folklore, the higher the ribbon lands, the most likely that your wish will come true!

#5 ‘Check-in’ at Sasaran Beach or Sky Mirror

If you visit Sky Mirror at the right day and time, you will surely understand why it is named as such. Touted as the ‘Salar de Uyuni of Malaysia’, it is a natural shallow sandbank that emerges for a few hours in the morning, and only on certain dates of the lunar month. The result is an almost perfect mirror-like reflection where sky meets water. Totally Instagram-worthy.

#6 Enjoy an unforgettable sunset view Pantai Remis

Visitors often stop by Pantai Remis on their way to watch fireflies in Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park, as the sunset view here is one of the most stunning in Kuala Selangor. Despite being unsuitable for swimming, the beach itself is a hotspot habitat for a variety of sea creatures, including clams, horseshoe crabs, sea snails, mussels and other shellfish species.

#7 Hike up Bukit Jugra, or paraglide off Bukit Jugra!

Thrill-seekers can find adrenaline-pumping activities at Bukit Jugra, where you can go tandem paragliding with an instructor from the base of the Bukit Jugra lighthouse and take in the panoramic view of the Straits of Malacca. Hiking up to the lighthouse is also another enjoyable activity. Whether by paragliding or hiking, the view from the top is the best reward.
